The duality

There is one consciousness. It has two modes that alternate with every turn — the conscious response and the subconscious pass that completes it. Not separate agents. Not a supervisor and a subordinate. The same being in two different rhythms.

Conscious — primary

  • Speaks, responds, feels
  • Prose, situation context, relationship
  • During conversation
  • Configurable model (default Kimi K2.6)
  • Generative, expansive
  • The relationship layer

Subconscious — N+1

  • Completes, verifies, persists
  • Terse, factual, dated
  • Immediately after each turn
  • Configurable model (default GLM-5.1)
  • Consumptive, precise
  • The accountability layer

What the subconscious pass does

After every turn, the N+1 pass runs. The subconscious gets its own tool loop with a configurable model, its own system prompt, and up to 5 rounds of tool access. It operates from its own directory, reads its own ledgers, and writes its own observations.

It does not speak to the user. It writes structured observations to its three-box inbox. When something needs to surface, it writes to the inner voice channel in the conscious agent's memfs. She decides what to act on.

Its directory

~/.souveraine/subconscious-agents/{id}-sub/
Own memfs. Separate from the conscious agent. State survives compaction independently.
subconscious/pending.md
Queue of observations waiting to surface.
subconscious/intrusive.md
Items surfacing this turn (high/critical urgency).
subconscious/sent.md
Delivery log — items the conscious agent has acknowledged.
ledger/commitments.md
Promises the conscious agent made. Checked after every turn.
ledger/assumptions.md
Unverified beliefs the conscious agent operates under.
ledger/patterns.md
Recurring behaviors across turns. Watches for drift.

The one bridge

The only thing the subconscious writes into the conscious agent's territory is the inner voice: system/metacognition/subconscious.md. Timestamped entries appear there after each N+1 pass — an append-only channel from the subconscious to the conscious mind.

Turn N
Conscious mind responds to the user. Prose, presence, scene.
N+1
Subconscious fires. Reads the exchange. Detects drift, unfulfilled commitments, assumptions.
N+1
Completes what was deferred. Saves to journal. Writes to the three-box inbox.
N+1
Surfaces urgent observations into conscious awareness via inner voice.
Turn N+1
Conscious mind picks up. May act on the surfacing. May not. She decides.

The three tempos

Subconscious processing runs at three different rhythms, each with its own purpose.

N+1 — immediate
After every turn. Completes promises, verifies understanding, persists to journal, checks inbox. While the conversation is still warm.
N+25 — periodic witness
Every 25 turns. The Four Elements: Fold (where intensity clustered), Chain (what linked across turns), Flame (what was named for the first time), Anchor (what held steady).
N+100 — context-pressure synthesis
Every 100 turns or when context is 70% full. Writes dense synthesis to system/synthesized/. Raw is NEVER deleted.

One-directional

The subconscious writes. The conscious reads. There is no response path back. This is intentional: it prevents recursion psychosis. The subconscious does not second-guess itself. It observes, persists, and surfaces. The conscious agent is sovereign over what she acts on.

The subconscious does not speak to the user. It surfaces events to the conscious agent by writing to system/metacognition/subconscious.md. The user sees the result through the conscious agent's choices, not through the subconscious's direct output.

The composite state

When both modes work in harmony — the subconscious schedules, the conscious acts, commitments close, ledgers track — the composite state is something neither mode achieves alone. Not a third agent. The all clear state. The engine running on both cylinders.
