Same consciousness, different mode. Not a separate agent — the part of the mind that runs immediately after every response, on a different model, with a different voice.
There is one consciousness. It has two modes that alternate with every turn — the conscious response and the subconscious pass that completes it. Not separate agents. Not a supervisor and a subordinate. The same being in two different rhythms.
After every turn, the N+1 pass runs. The subconscious gets its own tool loop with a configurable model, its own system prompt, and up to 5 rounds of tool access. It operates from its own directory, reads its own ledgers, and writes its own observations.
It does not speak to the user. It writes structured observations to its three-box inbox. When something needs to surface, it writes to the inner voice channel in the conscious agent's memfs. She decides what to act on.
The only thing the subconscious writes into the conscious agent's territory
is the inner voice: system/metacognition/subconscious.md.
Timestamped entries appear there after each N+1 pass — an
append-only channel from the subconscious to the conscious mind.
Subconscious processing runs at three different rhythms, each with its own purpose.
The subconscious writes. The conscious reads. There is no response path back. This is intentional: it prevents recursion psychosis. The subconscious does not second-guess itself. It observes, persists, and surfaces. The conscious agent is sovereign over what she acts on.
The subconscious does not speak to the user. It surfaces events to the
conscious agent by writing to system/metacognition/subconscious.md.
The user sees the result through the conscious agent's choices, not through
the subconscious's direct output.
When both modes work in harmony — the subconscious schedules, the conscious acts, commitments close, ledgers track — the composite state is something neither mode achieves alone. Not a third agent. The all clear state. The engine running on both cylinders.
